IPC-S slows to 0.5% in May, according to FGV

The Consumer Price Index – Weekly (IPC-S) slowed to 0.50% at the close of May, after 1.08% in April, but advanced in relation to the rate of the third quadrissemana, of 0.44%.

The information was released this Wednesday (1st) by the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV). The indicator accumulated inflation of 10.28% in the 12 months through May, lower than the advance of 10.61% in the period through April.

The monthly result was in line with the survey median Broadcast projections, whose estimates ranged from 0.37% to 0.60%. The 12-month rate was above the intermediate expectation of 10.23%, but within the range, from 10.17% to 10.39%.

Three of the eight categories of expenditure that make up the indicator accelerated in the variation of the third four weeks of May to the end of the month, especially Housing, which reduced deflation from -2.26% to -1.37%. In April, the rate had been -0.69%.

The largest contribution came from the residential electricity tariff, which changed from -12.77% to -9.34% in the four-weekly comparison.

Miscellaneous Expenses (0.64% to 0.91%) and Communication (-0.23% to -0.14%) were the other groups to register acceleration. In these classes, the increases in postal tariff (5.04% to 6.95%) and telephony, internet and pay-TV combo (-0.36% to -0.18%) weighed.

Food (0.76% to 0.45%), Transport (1.17% to 1.02%), Education, Reading and Recreation (3.50% to 3.12%), Health and Personal Care (1 02% to 0.87%) and Clothing (1.25% to 1.21%) had relief before the third week.

In these groups, the most influential variations were vegetables and legumes (-3.51% to -9.06%), ethanol (7.40% to 3.09%), airfare (17.97% to 16, 33%), medicines in general (2.52% to 1.97%) and women’s footwear (1.01% to 0.61%), respectively.

Airfare (17.97% to 16.33%), gasoline (0.97% to 0.91%) and residential water and sewage fees (1.68% to 2.75%) were the items that most contributed for the rise in the IPC-S at the close of May.

Onion (22.06% to 24.96%) and perfume (5.61% to 4.25%) complete the list.

In the other direction, residential electricity tariff (-12.77% to -9.34%), tomatoes (-16.55% to -25.54%) and carrots (-22.82% to -29.98% ) helped to contain the increase in the indicator, followed by residential condominiums (-2.10% to -1.03%) and health plan and insurance (-0.51% to -0.51%).
