About 62% of Brazilians believe that Brazil should remain neutral in relation to the War in Ukraine – that is, without supporting Russians or Ukrainians –, according to data collected by the latest Ipespe survey, released this Friday (11).
Almost all respondents — 97% — were aware of the crisis unfolding in Europe, with 56% of them saying that Ukraine “has more reason” in the conflict. However, a smaller percentage of people – 29% – think that Brazil should abandon neutrality and explicitly support the Ukrainians.
Another 2% would prefer support for Russia, and 7% could not answer the question.
The survey heard 1000 Brazilians from all regions of the country between March 7th and 9th, and has a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points, more or less. The confidence interval is 95.5%.
In addition to evaluating the stance of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in relation to the conflict [veja abaixo]respondents were also asked about the 2022 presidential election.
The war in Ukraine, which unfolds as the biggest tension on the European continent since the end of the Cold War, has already caused some 2.5 million refugees to leave the country. The number of civilians killed, according to the UN, is already at 564 people, but the agency says that the “real number could be higher”.
Russia, on the other hand, claims that the “special military operation” has “fulfilled its objectives” to ensure security in the region. However, the country has been the target of severe economic sanctions and pressure from the West to stop bombing Ukrainian cities. Follow the full coverage live on CNN Brasil.
Conflict between countries and Bolsonaro’s stance
Asked about the dangers of local war escalating into a world-scale conflict, 33% of respondents believe there is a “high chance” of this happening, while 32% rate it as “average chance”.
Another 17% say there is a “small chance”, and 12% do not think there is any possibility for it. 7% of respondents did not answer the question.
Ipespe also asked questions about Bolsonaro’s stance on the conflict.
Days before the first attack, Bolsonaro was in Russia for meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other local leaders. However, no episode was specified for the evaluation.
Jair Bolsonaro’s stance was evaluated as “totally wrong” by 33% and “partially wrong” by 15% of respondents. Another 25% supported the position, who judged it “totally correct”, while 17% judged it as “partially correct” to the survey.
