Iphan promotes temporary listing of the Ibirapuera complex

The National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan), a national preservation organization linked to the Ministry of Tourism, published, on Thursday (4), in the Official Gazette of the Union, the provisional listing of the Constâncio Vaz Guimarães Sports Complex, of which the Ibirapuera Gymnasium is part of its best-known equipment.

With about 100 thousand square meters, the sports complex located in the Ibirapuera district, is also composed of the Mauro Pinheiro Poliesportivo Gym, Ícaro de Castro Mello Stadium, Caio Pompeu de Toledo Water Complex, Judo Palace, tennis courts and administration buildings .

Within 15 days, as of today, the owner of the property –the state of São Paulo– has the right to consent to or request an objection to the listing. Even so, a compulsory listing can be carried out by Iphan after the application has been evaluated.

The government of São Paulo said, in a statement, that “it will take all measures, whether administrative or judicial, to reverse the decision published today by the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan), considering that there is no basis to support the Temporary listing of the facilities at the Constâncio Vaz Guimarães Sports Complex (Ibirapuera)”.

As a result of the provisional listing, any interventions in the complex and its surroundings must be previously authorized by the Iphan Superintendence in the state of São Paulo.

Approved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of São Paulo (Alesp), Bill 91/2019 establishes that the Constâncio Vaz Guimarães Sports Complex may be concessioned to the private sector for a period of 35 years, with a minimum investment of R$ 220 million for works of space modernization.
