iPhone 12 “blew up” the Japanese market: sales of 5G smartphones grew 40 times over the year

As it became known, with the release of iPhone 12 smartphones last year, sales of phones with 5G support in Japan soared dozens of times.

Apple was the market leader in 5G phones in Japan last year, according to new data. IPhone 12 smartphones accounted for almost half of the total shipments of smartphones with support for fifth generation networks. Sharp, Samsung, Fujitsu and Sony took the rest of the top five.

Japan saw a 40-fold increase in 5G model shipments in 2020. The positive trend is expected to continue this year. A report from the MM Research Institute, a Japanese research and consulting organization for the ICT market, claims that domestic smartphone shipments in Japan grew 16.9% last year to 32.757 million. This broke the record of 32.58 million smartphones sold in 2017.

Sales of smartphones iPhone 12 amounted to 11.01 million units, while in 2019, 269,000 thousand iPhones were sold in the country. The share of iPhone in total smartphone shipments increased from 1% in 2019 to 33.6%.
