Apple will buy 172 million flexible OLED panels from Samsung, LG and BOE this year, according to Omdia. Of the 172 million panels, 106 million are for the new iPhone 13 line.
Specifically, BOE will provide 9 million OLED screens for the Apple iPhone 12 Pro this year. BOE panels for iPhone 13 Pro are still in the certification process. These panels will go into mass production in the fourth quarter of 2021.
The iPhone 13 Pro models are reported to use LTPO screens, with the refresh rate being automatically adjusted according to the content (from 1Hz to 120Hz). According to Chinese media reports, BOE is already testing LPTO panels. However, it looks like the company has a lot of problems with this technology.
It is not yet known whether BOE will receive approval to supply screens for the iPhone 13 Pro. However, the quality of conventional OLED panels from BOE has improved significantly. According to reports, BOE is about to commercialize its own hexagonal crystal arrangement technology. This pixel arrangement technology is similar to LG and Samsung diamond arrangement technology.
The first smartphone to use BOE hexagonal crystal technology will be the Huawei P50 Pro +.
