iPhone 13 Pro Max passes harsh durability test versus Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra

Specialists of the well-known video channel PhoneBuff on YouTube conducted a new test of the durability of the most expensive Apple smartphone of the iPhone 13 line in comparison with the flagship Samsung – Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

This time, PhoneBuff dispensed with preliminary light tests and immediately went on to drops from a height of 1.5 m onto a concrete surface. Note that its predecessor, last year’s iPhone 12 Pro Max, withstood the same drop without any problems.

In live tests, the iPhone 13 Pro Max did not perform as well as the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Both smartphones, the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, when dropped from a height of 1.5 m with the back panel down, got multiple cracks. However, smartphones have remained fully functional. The camera and lidar continued to function correctly despite the broken glass of the iPhone 13 Pro Max. On the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, the metal camera block provided additional protection.

The smartphones also survived the fall sideways, the screen was not damaged, but the iPhone 13 Pro Max received more noticeable scratches on the edge. Both phones were cracked when dropped screen-down, although last year’s iPhone 12 Pro Max suffered such a drop without issue.

Nevertheless, after three falls, both smartphones remained fully functional. As a bonus, the smartphones were dropped 10 times on a steel surface. After the third fall, the iPhone 13 Pro Max lost a solid piece of glass on the back, and the screen stopped displaying in some places, but the touch layer continued to work correctly. After six drops, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has screen problems.

After a whole series of falls, you can see that the iPhone 13 Pro Max has suffered worse tests – the back panel has received multiple holes. However, apart from the back panel and the fact that not all screen pixels are working, the rest of the functionality of the smartphone is not affected. Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is visually less damaged, and the screen, albeit cracked, continues to work completely, without the “dropped out” pixels.

According to the results of all tests, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra won by one point compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max – 38 versus 37.
