According to iDropNews, the Cupertino giant may be keeping the legacy Lightning port for its iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models this year. The source adds that the main reason for the reluctance to switch to USB-C ports is profit. The iPhone maker was previously thought to be biding its time as it plans to eventually move to a portless design. However, the latest report says that Apple is driven solely by the issue of profit.
It’s worth remembering that Apple may charge royalties to any third party that tries to sell a Lightning cable. In other words, the transition to the universal USB-C standard will lead to the loss of a stable stream of income. So it’s highly likely that the company will stick with its signature design until the port-free iPhone finally hits the market.
It’s not all bad, though, as Apple is at least planning to update the Lightning port on the iPhone. The new version of the port will have USB 3.0 speed instead of the legacy USB 2.0 speed. This means that the next generation iPhone will support faster data transfer rates. However, sources say that such a port will not appear in the base iPhone 14 and the new iPhone 14 Max model.
