A few days ago, it was reported that Apple is considering a monthly hardware subscription program that will allow you to rent devices like the iPhone. We first heard rumors about this in late 2019, when CNBC reported that investors wanted the Cupertino giant to sell the iPhone on a subscription basis. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg spoke more about the program.
Apple already has an iPhone upgrade program that spreads the cost of the phone over 24 months. After payment, the phone becomes yours. The iPhone subscription service is rumored to be more like a rental program, but you won’t own the device.

Gurman believes that the subscription fee will be:
- iPhone 13: $35/month
- iPhone 13 Pro: $45/month
- iPhone 13 Pro Max: $50/month
The program may also include other services such as the Apple One subscription program and AppleCare support plans. A 2019 report said that such a program would allow the company to generate consistent income. The typical Apple user upgrades their iPhone every three years, which means they spend about $825 every three years on an Apple phone. In the new program, a person can pay $1,260 for three years ($35 x $26). When a user upgrades to a new model, Apple can sell the used device on the secondary market and make even more money.
The benefit to consumers will be that they won’t have to pay a large amount up front and will be able to easily upgrade to the latest models every year.
