The processes for the implementation of a new electricity interconnection between Greece and Albania are accelerated, after yesterday’s inaugural working meeting in which the President and CEO of IPTO, Mr. Manos Manousakis, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Energy of the neighboring country, Mr. Ilir Bejtja CEO of the Transmission System Operator of Albania (OST), Mr. Skerdi Drenova.

During yesterday, a very constructive discussion, the assistance of IPTO for the financial facilitation of the project on the Albanian side as well as the expansion of the cooperation of the two Managers in the energy and telecommunication field was specialized. More specifically, the prospect of participation of the Administrator of Albania in the Regional Energy Control Center “SEleNe CC”, based in Thessaloniki, was discussed, as well as mutually beneficial synergies in terms of utilization of state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure in Greece and Albania.

It is recalled that already in the autumn of 2021 IPTO has set up, together with the System Administrator of Albania, an operational team to study the new interconnection.

At the technical level, the electrical interconnection under consideration concerns a 400 kV High Voltage Overhead Transmission Line, which is expected to significantly increase the carrying capacity at the border between the two countries.

In the midst of the energy price crisis, IPTO reaffirms its strategic commitment to strengthening international connections to each side of the Greek border and lays the groundwork for the further strengthening of regional energy cooperation.
