IPVA-SP 2022: Payment with 9% discount due this Monday for final plaque 1

Owners of automotive vehicles with end plate 1 in the state of São Paulo you have until this Monday (10) to pay the value of the VAT cash with a 9% discount. After this period, a discount of 5% for payment in cash or in five installments becomes effective.

THE Tax on the Property of Automotive Vehicles (IPVA) of 2022 had an increase in value due to the rise in the prices of automobiles, reference for the calculation. However, the discount for cash payment in January is triple that of 2021, of 3%.

The expiry dates of the tax, established by the government of São Paulo, follow the last number of the vehicle’s license plate. On Tuesday (11), drivers with vehicle with ending 2 have the last day to pay in cash with a 9% discount, and so on, until ending plate 0, on January 21st.

Payment can be made via the bank network, with the generation of a bank slip. It is also possible to pay at lottery outlets or by credit card, at companies accredited to the São Paulo Finance Department (check the list here).

The rules apply to owners of all automotive vehicles covered by the IPVA, such as cars, vans, buses, motorcycles and trucks.

However, owners of 0 km vehicles have different rules. In this case, the discount of 3% of the total amount was maintained, with payment up to the fifth day after issuing the invoice. It is possible to pay in five installments, but without discount.

Although the discounts are the same, the dates are different for the IPVA of trucks and tractor-trucks. In this case, there is a specific month for the payment of a one-time fee with a 5% discount, in April.

If there is five installments, payments start in March, but skip the months of April and June. The month of February does not enter the payment calendar either.

In installments or in cash?

For specialists consulted by CNN Brasil Business, the choice of paying IPVA in cash, with a greater discount, or in installments must take into account the financial situation of each person.

In general, the recommendation is to pay in cash only if the amount does not leave the person without financial reserve for emergencies.

In addition, experts advise against borrowing to make the payment, as contracting one debt to avoid another is risky. For people unable to pay in cash, it is necessary to organize themselves to guarantee payments in installments.

“If you are going to borrow money to make the payment in cash, I believe it is not worth it, because the person will probably pay a higher interest rate during this period”, says Ricardo Teixeira, coordinator of the MBA in Financial Management at FGV.
