Eleven people were killed and 486 others were injured in what became known as the Chaharshanbe Suri Festival in Iran, Iranian state television reported today.
Among the injured are 49 mutilated people, said the representative of the Emergency Management Agency, Moztaba Khaledi, who clarified that the report refers to events that took place in the last five days.
The Fire Festival is celebrated by Iranians on the eve of the last Wednesday before the Iranian New Year, which this year is March 21.
According to custom, Iranians jump over fires and throw fireworks in public places to say goodbye to the passing year.
