Iran: 19 killed in high-rise building collapse in Abadan

At least 19 people have been killed since Monday when a high-rise building under construction in Abadan, southwestern Iran, collapsed, a local official told the semi-official state-run ISNA news agency.

Ishan Abbaspour, deputy governor of Khuzestan province, said 37 people had been injured so far and were being treated in hospitals.

About 2,000 workers are involved in the rescue operation, which will continue until the last victim is retrieved, according to Abbaspour.

On Tuesday, the Mizan news agency reported that 10 people were arrested for the collapse of the building that was still under construction.

Among those arrested are the contractor overseeing the work and the owner, city prosecutor Hamid Maranipour said. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the disaster.

The building was located on the main, busiest street in the city. Neighboring buildings house commercial activities or offices.
