Iran: A French tourist arrested 10 months ago is accused of espionage

French tourist Benjamin Brier, who was arrested at Iran 10 months ago, he was facing charges of “espionage and spreading propaganda against the regime,” said one of his lawyers, Saeed Dehgan.

“On Sunday, March 14, he was charged with espionage and propaganda against the Islamic Republic,” Dehgan said, adding that Brier was at risk of a long prison sentence if convicted.

At present, the Iranian judicial authorities have not commented on the case.

Last month, the French Foreign Ministry confirmed that a French citizen was being held in Iran and added that it was monitoring the situation.

Dehgan said the 35-year-old Frenchman was arrested for flying a drone near Iran’s border with Turkmenistan.

“He is being held in Wakilabad Prison in Mashhad. “His health condition is good and he has access to his lawyers, while he enjoys consular protection and officials of the French embassy have regular contact with him”, he added.

The lawyer explained that the French tourist was charged with “propaganda against the regime” due to a post on a social networking site stating that hijab was mandatory in Iran, but not in other Islamic countries.
