Iran: A Spanish woman who was arrested during the protests over the death of Mahsa Amini was released

From Iran 24-year-old Spaniard Ana Baneira has been released, according to the Spanish foreign minister, as the woman was arrested in November during mass protests over the death of Mahsa Amini.

“She was released yesterday, but we didn’t want to announce it before her plane took off from Iran,” Jose Manuel Albarez told reporters.

“I spoke with her (…) she is fine,” added the Spanish Foreign Minister.

Spanish diplomatic sources had announced in November the arrest of a Spanish woman, without giving further details, but the non-governmental organization Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) had reported that it was a 24-year-old woman.

The circumstances of her arrest have never been officially confirmed, but it came as Iran was rocked by the protest movement following the death of Mahsha Amini last September.

Another Spanish citizen, Santiago Sanchez Cogedor, has been detained in Iran since October.

A soccer fan, he had set off to reach Qatar on foot for the World Cup and was arrested shortly after entering Iran.

“Today is a happy day, but the joy will be complete when Santiago is freed,” said the Spanish foreign minister.

“I will not stop insisting (to Tehran) and taking action until Santiago is released. This is an arrest without any basis.”
