Iran has accused Israel of carrying out a “terrorist act” and “genocide” after pagers owned by Hezbollah members exploded in Lebanon, killing 12 people and injuring thousands.
Nasser Kanaani, spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said the explosions were a “continuation of the complex operations of the Zionist entity and its mercenary agents.”
“These acts are in stark contrast to all moral and humanitarian principles, as well as international law, especially international humanitarian law, and they warrant international criminal prosecution, trial and punishment,” Kanaani said.
Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, was among those injured in Beirut, along with two embassy staff, according to Iranian state media.
Iran supports Hezbollah, which is one of the most powerful militia groups in the Middle East and has been engaged in daily exchanges of fire with Israel since the October 7 attacks.
Kanaani said the attack, which CNN discovered to be the result of a joint operation between Israel’s intelligence service, the Mossad, and the Israeli army, proves that Israel “poses a serious threat to international peace and security.”
“The international community must act swiftly to ensure that criminal Zionist officials are held accountable,” Kanaani said.
