Iran announces three deaths due to Omicron

Iran’s health ministry announced on Saturday the country’s first three deaths from the Omicron strain.

“The number of Omicron patients in the country has reached 1,162 and one death has been reported due to Omicron in each of the cities of Tabriz, Yazd and Shahrekord, while one seriously ill patient is being treated at Ahvaz hospital,” said ministry spokesman Mohammad Hashemi. to the state broadcaster IRIB, according to Reuters.

Iran lifted travel restrictions to and from neighboring countries and some European countries this week, but maintained a ban on arrivals from Britain, France and eight South African countries over fears of Omicron, according to Iranian media.

Iran, the epicenter of the pandemic in the Middle East, has recorded 132,044 deaths from coronavirus since February 2020. Deaths have dropped in recent months to 18 on Saturday, a 22-month low, according to state television.

More than 53 million people out of a total population of about 85 million in the country have received the two doses of the coronavirus vaccine and 12.2 million have received the third dose.
