Iranian authorities have seized a ship carrying 106,500 liters of smuggled fuel and arrested its nine-member crew, the Tasnim news agency reported today.
“Following the orders of the Kess prosecutor, officers from the Navy base, after locating a ship carrying 106,500 liters of smuggled fuel, began the seizure process,” the Hormozgan provincial court chief said.
Iran, where fuel prices are among the lowest in the world due to high government subsidies and the devaluation of the country’s currency, is facing fuel smuggling to its neighbors by land and by sea to the Gulf countries.
Several ships have been detained in recent months for trying to smuggle fuel out of Iran into Gulf countries.
