European Union Foreign Minister Joseph Borrell is expected to meet tonight in Tehran with Iranian officials responsible for talks on Iran’s nuclear program, which have stalled since March, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.
This visit was not announced earlier.
“Borrell will visit Tehran tonight to meet with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and other Iranian officials,” a spokesman for the ministry said in a statement.
“The visit, which is part of the ongoing consultations between Iran and the EU, will focus on bilateral relations, some regional and international issues, as well as the progress of the negotiations on the lifting of sanctions.” Tehran, the announcement added.
Enrique Mora, the EU negotiator in Iran’s talks with the major powers aimed at reviving the 2015 agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, posted a photo on Twitter on Thursday from the dinner he had in Brussels with Borrell and the expert US Delegate to Iran Robert Maley with the caption: “In-depth discussion on the CIS (Joint Integrated Action Plan, the official name of the 2015 agreement) and regional perspectives in the Middle East. Maley reiterated the US commitment to agreement”.
The United States unilaterally withdrew from this agreement in 2018 during the presidency of Donald Trump, reinstating sanctions against Iran.
Talks in Vienna on reviving the agreement began in April 2021, but have stalled due to disagreements between Tehran and Washington.
