Iran calls on Russia and Ukraine to ‘restrain themselves’

Tehran today called on Moscow and Kiev to show “restraint” following Moscow’s decision to recognize the independence of the breakaway republics of eastern Ukraine and to “deploy Russian troops” there.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran calls on all parties to show restraint and to refrain from any action that could exacerbate tensions,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, the interventions and provocative actions of NATO, and especially of the United States, have complicated the situation in the region,” he added, without elaborating.

“We are closely monitoring issues related to Ukraine,” he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the Defense Ministry to send Russian forces to “carry out peacekeeping missions” in the two separatist-held areas of eastern Ukraine, according to a decree issued in the early hours of today, after Moscow said will recognize their independence.
