Iran: Couple sentenced to death for adultery

A 27-year-old man and his 33-year-old mistress were sentenced to death for adultery in the Iran, wrote today the reformist newspaper Sargh, citing the decision of the Supreme Court.

Earlier this year, the cheating wife presented police with a video of her husband and mistress having an affair before finally forgiving them. However, her father demanded the death penalty for his son-in-law and his mistress.

Sargh writes in its Saturday edition that the 26th Division of Iran’s Supreme Court recently upheld the sentence “based on video and their confessions.”

In Iran, adultery carries the death penalty by stoning, according to Article 104 of the Penal Code, which, however, gives the judge the choice to choose hanging instead of stoning.

If the family of a victim forgives a criminal who has been sentenced to death, the sentence is not carried out.

According to Amnesty International, Iran executed 246 people in 2020.
