Iran deploys troops to borders with Armenia and Azerbaijan

Iran goes on the offensive. The Islamic Republic has deployed troops along its border with Azerbaijan and Armenia, after gunfire on its territory from Nagorny Karabakh where the two countries are in conflict, said Sunday (October 25th) the ideological army of the Islamic Republic.

An Armenian separatist enclave within Azerbaijan, the territory of Nagorny Karabakh, bordering Iran, has been the scene of violent fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces since the end of September.

“Protect national interests and maintain peace and security”

Revolutionary Guard units “have been sent and stationed in the region due to the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” said the commander of the ground forces of the Ideological Army of Iran, Mohammad Pakpour. Their mission is to “protect national interests and maintain peace and security,” he added, quoted by Iranian state agency Irna. According to him, Iran respects the territorial integrity of its neighbors, but “any change” to the borders is “a red line for the Islamic Republic”.

In recent weeks, rockets and mortar shells have hit villages in the Iranian county of Khoda Afarin, neighboring Nagorny Karabakh, according to Iranian media. “If such shots are repeated, Iran will not remain indifferent,” the Foreign Affairs spokesperson tweeted in mid-October.

Iran, which maintains good relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan, has repeatedly called on these two countries to cease hostilities, and offered its mediation.
