Iran on Monday carried out the death sentence for four people it says were linked to an Israeli intelligence operation, after the Supreme Court rejected their appeal, Iranian state media reported.
The defendants were accused of illegally entering Iranian territory from the Iraqi Kurdistan region to carry out a bombing operation on an Isfahan-based factory that produced equipment for Iran's Ministry of Defense.
Their operation was supposed to take place in the summer of 2022 on behalf of Israel's Mossad and was prevented by Iranian intelligence, according to reports.
Iran and Israel are long-time enemies and are currently in a dispute over Iran's nuclear program.
Israel accuses Iran of supporting militant attacks against the country, while Iran claims that Israel has committed a series of assassinations of Iranian officials and scientists. Israel neither confirms nor denies such actions.
