Iran: Female students expelled from universities for not wearing hijab

In the Iran at least 60 female students expelled from universities across the country for choosing not to wear hijab, as required by law. In the wake of protests over the death of Mahsha Amini in September 2022, a new form of protest appears to be emerging from the country’s young women.

According to the British newspaper “The Guardian” this movement is also a kind of solidarity with women and girls who are harassed on the streets, public transport and educational institutions because they do not cover their heads and faces. Not long ago a man threw yogurt at a teenage girl for not wearing a hijab.

Students say that the arrests of women are increasing, while they are threatened with more serious consequences if they continue not to wear the hijab. In fact, nine of them stated that there are fears for the continuation of their studies, after the suspension and ban on their entry to the schools.

“We are being banned en masse from entering the university because we refuse to wear the hijab and in recent days there has been a violent crackdown on us because we were peacefully sitting in protest”, said a student from a university in Tehran. He added that security officials “we were violently thrown out of the classrooms”.

“Dark Future”

Those professors who supported the protest of the female students were attacked and expelled from the university.

I have received repeated suspensions for protesting the death of Mahsha Amini. Considering I’ll be suspended again next semester, I’ll be back a full year. I dream of studying abroad, but unfortunately, given the current situation, my future is dark“, said a female student.

“Three days after I shared a post about the death penalty, the university’s security team confiscated my phone after raiding our residence hall. They also collect protest posters or anything related to the ongoing revolution and warned us of worse consequences,” added another.

Recently, a photography exhibition at Tehran University of Fine Arts was canceled because some images showed women not wearing hijabs or showing parts of their bodies.

In September 2022, Mahsa Amini breathed her last after being arrested by the morality police for “not wearing her headscarf properly”, sparking a storm of backlash. In fact, female and male demonstrators had flooded the streets with the slogan “Women, Life, Freedom”.
