Iran announced today that the United States must guarantee that it will not withdraw unilaterally from the 2015 nuclear deal again if it is to succeed in reviving talks.
Indirect talks between Iran and the United States, which came to a standstill in June following the election of hardline Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, are expected to begin on November 29 in Vienna with the aim of reviving the 2015 agreement.
Former US President Donald Trump withdrew his country from it in 2018 and reinstated sanctions against Iran.
Echoing Tehran’s official stance, Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibazedeh said Washington should lift its sanctions on Iran through a verifiable process and “acknowledge its responsibility to withdraw from the agreement.”
Khatibazedeh said Ali Bagheri-Kani, Iran’s chief negotiator on its nuclear program, would travel this week as deputy foreign minister for political affairs to the capitals of European countries that have signed the 2015 agreement.
