Iran has handed over to European powers involved in the 2015 nuclear deal two drafts for lifting sanctions and nuclear commitments, Iran’s chief negotiator said today as international forces and Tehran work to restore the deal.
“We have given them two drafts … Of course they have to check the texts we have given them. If they are ready to continue the talks, we are in Vienna to continue the talks,” Ali Bagheri told reporters in Vienna.
A European diplomat in Vienna confirmed that draft documents had been delivered.
The announcement came on the fourth day of indirect talks between Iran and the United States on the return of both to the agreement. The talks resumed after a five-month hiatus caused by the election of hardline Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
Under the agreement, Tehran reduced its nuclear program in exchange for easing economic sanctions by the United States, the European Union and the United Nations.
But then-US President Donald Trump abandoned the deal in 2018 and reinstated harsh US sanctions, with the result that Tehran violated its nuclear program.
