Iran holds military drill in northern part of country: Mehr news agency

Iran is holding a military exercise in the north of the country, Mehr news agency reported on Tuesday (13), as the region prepares for retaliation against Israel over the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month.

The drill was scheduled to take place Tuesday night from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. local time in Iran’s Caspian province of Gilan. The aim was to increase the defensive readiness of the army’s naval forces, a local official was quoted as saying by Mehr.

This is Iran’s second reported military exercise in three days. The country has vowed to retaliate against Israel following Haniyeh’s assassination on July 31 in Tehran.

Iran has blamed Israel for the assassination. The Israeli government, however, has not claimed responsibility.

The killing has prompted threats of revenge from Tehran, raising fears of a wider war in the Middle East.
