Iran: It is not constructive for Moscow to ask for written guarantees that sanctions against it will not harm cooperation

Russia’s request for written assurances from the United States that sanctions against it will not affect its cooperation with Iran is “not constructive” in talks between Tehran and the major powers on the revival of its nuclear deal. 2015, according to a senior Iranian official.

Russia’s announcement, which could torpedo talks that have been going on for months in Vienna, came shortly after Tehran announced it had reached an agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on a “roadmap” to help resolve outstanding issues.

“The Russians put this request on the table (of the Vienna talks) two days ago. We understand that by changing its position in the Vienna talks, Russia wants to safeguard its interests elsewhere. This is not the case. “constructive for the Vienna nuclear talks,” the Iranian official told Reuters.

Earlier in the day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Western sanctions on his country over the war in Ukraine were an obstacle to a nuclear deal with Iran. He even warned that Russian interests should be taken into account.

Lavrov said Russia wanted written assurances from the United States that Moscow’s trade, investment and military-technological cooperation with Iran would not be hampered in any way by sanctions.

The State Department responded tonight that new sanctions against Russia would have no effect on the possible revival of the nuclear deal with Iran. “We continue to work with Russia to return to full implementation of the JCPOA. It is in Russia’s common interest to ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon,” a spokesman said.

Two diplomats, one of whom is not directly involved in the talks, said China had also asked for written assurances that its companies working with Iran would not be affected by US sanctions.

Such demands could complicate efforts to reach an agreement, at a time when it was on the horizon. All parties involved in the Vienna talks said on Friday that they were close to reaching an agreement.
