After a building collapse on Monday left 11 people dead in the Iranian city of Abadan, judicial authorities detained the city’s mayor and nine others, state media reported on Tuesday.
The ten-story residential and commercial building partially collapsed, leaving at least 80 people trapped under the rubble, according to state TV.
“Ten people who are the main elements involved in this incident, including the current and former mayors of Abadan, several municipal officials and those who oversaw this project have been detained and the investigation continues,” local prosecutor Sadeq Jafari Chegeni told state TV.
Authorities said other sections of the building could collapse and urged people not to gather near the site.
Mojtaba Khaledi, a spokesman for the state’s emergency services, told television that as many as 50 people could still be trapped under the rubble.
In 2017, 20 firefighters died when a 17-story office building in the capital Tehran collapsed as they tried to put out a blaze.
The disaster prompted accusations that warnings about poor safety standards and the building’s weak structure were ignored.
