More than 80 people have died and 30 are still missing in Iran more than a week after floods swept through several parts of the country, official sources said today.
Since the beginning of the month of Mordad (on July 23), “59 people have died and 30 are reported missing due to the floods,” said Yagub Soleimani, secretary general of the Iranian Red Crescent, according to the official IRNA news agency.
A tally that adds to the 22 deaths announced on July 22 following torrential rains in the south of the country.
A largely arid country, Iran faces recurring droughts this decade and frequent floods caused by torrential rains.
According to Soleimani, 60 major cities, 140 smaller ones and more than 500 villages have been affected, in a country of 83 million inhabitants.
The province of the capital Tehran was the most affected, with 35 dead, while in Mazandaran, in the north, 20 people are still unaccounted for, according to the same source.
President Ebrahim Raisi visited the Firuzkouh district, east of Tehran, according to his office.
As reported by the state television network IRIB, Agriculture Minister Javad Sadatinejad estimated the amount of damage in the agricultural sector at almost 195 million euros.
According to the Iranian Meteorological Center, the north and south of the country are expected to be hit by new rains in the coming days.
