Iran: More than 800 injured after the strong earthquake on the border with Turkey

A total of 816 people were injured, after the earthquake of magnitude 5.9 on the Richter scale that occurred on Saturday night in the northwestern part of the country, on the border with Turkeywhich has so far claimed the lives of three people.

“So far, because of this earthquake we have three dead and 816 injured”the governor of East Azerbaijan province, Mohammad Sadek Motamedian, said, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi went to Khoi to assess the situation and supervise the work of the authorities, IRNA also reported.

On January 18, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake near Hoi An injured several hundred people.

In February 2020, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the village of Hambas-i-Olia (east), killing at least nine people across the border in Turkey.

The deadliest earthquake ever recorded in Iran, with a magnitude of 7.4, hit the northern part of the country in 1990: 40,000 people had lost their lives, another 30,000 had been injured, half a million people had been left homeless.
