Iran: Navy says it repelled an ‘attack’ in the Red Sea

The Iranian Navy said today that it intervened to rescue an Iranian vessel that was the victim of “attack ships” in the Red Sea yesterday.

“Iranian naval armed forces (…) immediately arrived on the scene after receiving a call for help from an Iranian vessel in the Red Sea the previous night,” the second in command of naval operations, Admiral Mustafa Tajentini, told state television.

“Thanks to the effective presence (of the PN) and after fierce exchanges, the attacking ships fled,” he added without giving more details about the method of action or the identity of the perpetrators of this attack.

In the fall of 2021, Iranian media reported pirate attacks on three Iranian tankers in the Gulf of Aden.

The Islamic Republic had already boosted its presence in the Gulf of Aden following a wave of attacks by Somalia-based pirates on ships transiting through the Red Sea and then the Suez Canal.

The number of attacks has greatly decreased in recent years.
