Iran’s Vice President Mohammad Javad Zarif said today that the attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023 “undermined” negotiations on the nuclear program between Iran and the United States. “We didn’t know about October 7,” Zarif, the vice president for strategic affairs, said in a speech during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “We were supposed to have a meeting with the Americans to renew the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on October 9, a meeting that was undermined and destroyed by this operation,” he said, referring to the name of the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, which reached in 2015 between Tehran and major powers, including the United States.
