Iran has presented European parties involved in a 2015 nuclear deal with two drafts on removing sanctions imposed on the country and nuclear commitments, an Iranian official said on Thursday, as world powers and Iran try to re-establish the pact.
“We delivered two draft proposals to them… of course they need to check the texts we give them. If they are willing to continue the talks, we are in Vienna to continue the talks,” Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, told reporters in the Austrian capital.
A European diplomat in Vienna confirmed that draft documents were handed over.
The announcement came on the fourth day of indirect talks between Iran and the United States about their full return to the agreement. They resumed after a five-month hiatus sparked by the election of hardline president Ebrahim Raisi in Iran.
Under the pact, Iran limited its nuclear program in exchange for easing US, European Union and United Nations (UN) economic sanctions.
But then US President Donald Trump abandoned the agreement in 2018 and reactivated tough US sanctions, inducing the Iranians to violate pact limits on their nuclear program.
