Iran: ‘Saudi Arabia takes a step towards restoring our relations’

Iran has been informed of Saudi Arabia’s willingness to move bilateral dialogue aimed at restoring ties between the region’s two rival powers to a “political level”, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said.

The two countries have held five rounds of talks in Baghdad since last year. The latest was in April and reportedly involved senior officials from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and Saudi Arabia’s intelligence services.

“As far as Saudi Arabia is concerned, we have held five rounds of negotiations, mainly on the security level, and progress has been made in these negotiations,” Amir-Abdollahian said in an interview on state television on Thursday night.

“Last week, we received a message from the Iraqi foreign minister that the Saudi side is ready to move the talks to the political level,” he said, adding that Tehran is “ready for the talks to move to the political phase “.

The Iranian minister expressed hope that the negotiations would lead to “normal diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shiite Iran severed relations in 2016 after Saudi diplomatic missions were attacked by protesters in the Islamic Republic after Riyadh executed a prominent Shiite cleric.

The two rival powers, which accuse each other of destabilizing the Middle East, have nevertheless expressed their willingness to overcome their differences and have begun negotiations that were first made public in April 2021.
