Iran says condemns Russian annexation attempt in Ukraine

Iran’s delegation would have voted in favor of the UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s attempt to absorb parts of Ukraine “if the entire body of the resolution is (focused) on condemning this annexation”, a spokesperson told CNN on Friday (14th).

Iran was absent on Wednesday (12) during the vote, which was approved by a majority.

The resolution calls on countries and international organizations not to recognize Russia’s so-called annexation of the four regions, demands its immediate reversal and calls for Russia to “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its military forces from Ukraine’s territory within its international territory.” and recognized borders”.

Iran considers the resolution “based on political motives”, it told CNN a media adviser to the Iranian Mission to the United Nations.

“Some items of the resolution were not acceptable to Iran, but some parts of the text of the resolution that respected the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of countries is an immutable principle in the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said the adviser, citing the example of Iran not recognizing Kosovo because its declaration of independence “was a violation of Serbia’s territorial integrity”.

Iran has supplied Russia with drones that were used during the war against Ukraine, but Tehran’s relations with Moscow are not without complications.
