The Iranian foreign minister said in Ankara today that he “understands” the need for a new Turkish military operation against Kurdish fighters in northern Syria.
“We understand very well Turkey’s security concerns,” Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told a joint news conference with Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşo .lu.
“We understand that a special operation (in Syria) may be necessary,” he added.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly threatened since the end of May to launch a new offensive against two locations in northern Syria, targeting Kurdish rebels whom he calls “terrorists”.
“We will start a new operation in Syria as soon as our preparations are completed,” the Turkish head of state said today.
Washington and Moscow have expressed opposition to such an attack.
Since 2016, Ankara has conducted three military operations in northern Syria against the People’s Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish militia it considers terrorist but which is backed by the US mainly to fight Islamic State jihadists.
An ally of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Iran had called on Ankara in late 2019 to put an end as soon as possible to an attack that had just begun in northern Syria.
