Iran sentences a couple to 10 years in prison for posting a video of them dancing

The activist group Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that an Iranian couple, both influencerswas sentenced to more than ten years in prison after one of her videos in which they appear dancing in a public square went viral.

The clip shows Astiyazh Haghighi, 21, dancing unveiled with her fiancé Amir Mohammad Ahmadi, 22. Both were charged with “spreading corruption and vice” and “gathering and colluding with intent to disrupt national security”.

According to HRANA, Astiyazh did not wear the headscarf dictated by the dress code implemented by the Iranian government, which the authorities took as a defiance of the code. In addition, women are prohibited from dancing in public.

Judge Abolqasem Salavati presided over the case and sentenced the couple to 10 and a half years in prison. In addition, it prohibited them from posting videos on social networks and from leaving the country for two years.

The Iranian police captured the couple at their home during the early morning of October 30, 2022, both were taken for interrogation and later transferred to prison.

Astiyazh was sent to Evin Prison and later transferred to Qarchak Women’s Prison where she is being held. Her fiancée remains in the men’s prison. It is worth mentioning that both were denied access to a lawyer as required by law and their request for bail was rejected.

Subsequently, Iran’s Judiciary news agency Mozan Online reported that pressure from media and activists got the sentence reduced to just five years in prison. However, this information has not been confirmed by HRANA, an activist group that follows the couple’s case.
