Iran: Tehran denounces “sabotage” against Iranian ship in Mediterranean

The Iran denounces “sabotage” in the Mediterranean on a merchant ship of an Iranian company, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which clarifies that the attack caused material damage to the ship.

“We have received information confirming that the ship was attacked by sabotage,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh, adding that the incident was a clear violation of international law and the law of the sea.

The container ship named Iran Shahr-e-Kord, owned by the Iranian company IRISL, was sailing between Iran and Europe when its hull was hit by an “explosive device” on Wednesday, the representative of the shipping company announced yesterday, denouncing “terrorism energy “and” an example of piracy “.

Saeed Hatibzadeh stressed that Tehran monitors “seriously the incident in its different dimensions to identify the perpetrators”.

The incident comes less than two weeks after Israel accused Tehran of being responsible for an attack on an Israeli ship in the Gulf of Oman. The charges were dropped by Iran.

IRISL has been on the US blacklist since last year for transporting material related to Iran’s nuclear and missile program.

Former US President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the international agreement on control of Tehran’s nuclear program in 2018 and reinstated US sanctions against Iran.
