Iran: Tehran faces worst drought in half a century

The worst drought for half a century it hits its capital Iran, the Tehran, with rainfall to have been reduced by 97% compared to last year, as announced today, Tuesday (26/10) a high-ranking official of the regional water service.

More specifically, the rainfall in the Iranian capital had reached 4 millimeters on September 23, compared to 14.3 millimeters in the same period last year, according to the Deputy Director of Water and Hydroelectric Power, Mohammad Sariari, as reported by the Isna agency.

“Groundwater and groundwater are at critical levels, and there has been no drought in the last 50 years,” he added. The five dams that supply water to Tehran are only one-third full, according to the APE-MPE.

On the contrary, water consumption for agriculture and industry increased by 14% and 8% respectively at the end of September compared to 2020.

The province of Tehran has a population of 13.5 million, or 16.5% of the population of Iran, in an area that does not exceed 1.1% of the total area of ​​the country.
