Iran: Tehran seeks guarantees that US will not withdraw from new deal on Iran’s nuclear program

Assurances from the US that they will not back down from a possible agreement on the Iran’s nuclear program Iranian President Ibrahim Raishi asked on Monday (19/9), shortly before leaving for New York where he will participate in the UN General Assembly.

Last month, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Tehran needed stronger guarantees from Washington to revive the 2015 deal and called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to end “politically motivated inspections” of Iranian nuclear program.

During an interview on CBS’ 60 Minutes, which was taped last Tuesday, Raisi said, as reported by the Athens News Agency: “If it’s a good deal and a fair deal, we will seriously pursue the achievement her”.

At the same time, the Iranian president emphasized that the agreement “should last. They need guarantees. If there are guarantees, then the Americans will not be able to withdraw from it.”

Raisi pointed out that the Americans did not keep their promises under the 2015 agreement.

“They did it unilaterally. They said: ‘I’m withdrawing from the agreement’. Now the promises have no meaning,” he stressed. “We cannot trust the Americans because of the behavior we have seen from them. For this reason, if there are no guarantees, there is no trust.”

The US television network reported that Raisi’s interview with Leslie Stahl was the first the Iranian president has granted to a Western journalist. “We were told how to dress, not to sit in front of him, not to interrupt him,” Stahl said.

Under the 2015 agreement signed by the Group of 5+1 (US, China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany) with Iran, Tehran had agreed to significantly curtail its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against her.

Three years later, under the presidency of Donald Trump, the US withdrew from the agreement unilaterally and reimposed sanctions against it Iran.

Current US President Joe Biden favors a renegotiation of the deal, but Tehran’s insistence on receiving guarantees from Washington is stalling talks.

The USA they explain that they cannot give such guarantees, as they do not know what will be the attitude of the next presidents of the country on the matter.

There are no signs that Tehran and Washington will be able to overcome their differences, but Iran is expected to use the UN General Assembly to continue diplomatic efforts while reiterating that it wants a deal.

However, Raisi has ruled out the possibility of meeting with Biden during his stay in New York, and the American president, for his part, has not expressed a desire to talk with him on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
