Iran: Tehran warns US not to threaten to use force

Iran’s military warned the United States and Israel today not to threaten Iran with the use of force, Iranian media reported, after US President Joe Biden said he would use force as a last resort to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapon.

“The Americans and the Zionists (Israel) know very well the price if they use the word ‘violence’ against Iran,” Brigadier General Abolfazi Sekarchi, a spokesman for the Iranian armed forces, was quoted as saying by state media.

“Biden must have been half asleep when he threatened Iran,” he said, adding, “Watch your soldiers’ pants — they might get wet in Persian!”.

Asked by Israeli television this week if his statements that he would prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon meant he could use force against Iran, Biden replied: “If it was a last resort, yes.”

Yesterday, Thursday, Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid signed a joint pledge not to allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, apparently in an effort to meet Israel’s calls for a “credible military threat” from world powers.

Iran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear program serves only peaceful purposes.

Tehran reached a deal with six major powers in 2018 under which it curbed its uranium enrichment program to make it harder to obtain a nuclear weapon, in exchange for an easing of international sanctions.

US President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal in 2018 and reinstated tough sanctions against Iran. As a result, Tehran began violating the agreement’s restrictions about a year later.

Diplomatic efforts to revive the agreement have so far been fruitless.
