Iran: The government invited the king of Saudi Arabia to visit Tehran

His government’s invitation is official Iran for Saudi Arabia’s King Salman to visit the country, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said, after the two regional rivals agreed to end years of hostility following a Chinese-brokered deal in March.

After years of poor relations that fueled proxy conflicts in the Middle East, where Tehran and Riyadh backed opposing sides from Yemen to Syria, Shiite Iran and Sunni Saudi Arabia reached an agreement to end a seven-year diplomatic rift.

“The Iranian president (Ebrahim Raisi) sent an invitation to the Saudi king in return for Riyadh’s invitation to him,” said Nasser Kanaani in a televised press conference.

Technical delegations from the two countries are preparing to officially reopen their missions, and Tehran said the missions will resume operations by May 9, Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.
