Iran: “The protestors’ message is good,” says former president Mohammad Khatami

Its former reformist president IranMohammad Khatami, welcomed the “nice message” of protesters in the country and stated that the concepts of “freedom and security” are not contradictory; three months after its commencement protest movement sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini.

Referring to central slogan of the movement “Woman, Life, Freedom” welcomed “a nice message that shows the way to a better future» in a statement issued on the occasion of Students’ Day.

Students across the country are participating in the protest movement, which has won Iranian universities, which developed into a theater of demonstrations and conflicts.

Now 79, Mohammad Khatami was president of the Islamic Republic from 1997 until 2007, when he was silenced by the regime.

Freedom and security are not contradictory concepts” Khatami also states, in his statement broadcast by the Isna news agency. “Liberty must not be trampled in order to maintain security, and “security must not be ignored in the name of liberty.”

The former president also took a stand against the arrests of students, saying, according to APE-MPE, that the restrictions “cannot guarantee the stable security of universities and society.”

Mohammad Khatami calls on the authorities to “reach out to the students” and recognize with their help the “bad sides of governance”.

Hundreds of people, mainly protesters, but also members of the security forces, have been killed during the repression of the demonstrationsand thousands of people, including journalists, actors and lawyers have been arrested during the protests.
