Iran: Transfer of centrifuges from Karaj to Natanz following ‘terrorist attack’

The relocation of a significant part of the centrifuges to a safer location was due to a “terrorist attack” on Iran’s nuclear facilities in Karaj, the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said today.

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, said on Thursday that Iran had moved a new laboratory to Natanz that manufactures parts for centrifuges for uranium enrichment underground.

The laboratory uses devices from facilities in Karaj, west of Tehran, which are now closed and were attacked by Israel last June, according to Iran.

“Because of the terrorist operation against the Karaj TESA complex, we had to step up security and move a significant portion of the centrifuges to a safer location,” said Behrouz Kamalvadi, a spokesman for the Atomic Energy Agency of Iran.

He blamed the International Atomic Energy Agency for failing to pay attention to Israel’s “malicious operations” against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The IAEA informed its member states two weeks ago that Iran had moved the devices to Natanz without specifying the exact location of the facility.

Grossi told a news conference yesterday that the lab was set up in “one of the rooms” of the underground uranium enrichment plant. He did not elaborate, but diplomats say the plant is located about three floors below ground, possibly to protect it from possible air strikes.

Last year, Iran and the United States engaged in indirect, intermittent talks in Vienna on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal that the United States withdrew from then-President Donald Trump and which Iran, in turn, began. to violate in 2019.

Under the 2015 agreement, Iran agreed to curtail its nuclear program in exchange for lifting economic sanctions.

As it seemed to be close to reviving the deal in March, talks stalled over Russia ‘s last – minute demands and whether Washington would remove the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps from its list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

Meanwhile, the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Salami, said today that Israel was creating the conditions for its own destruction with its “malicious actions”.

“Stop your evil deeds. You know very well that we are people of action and reaction. Our answers will be painful. You create the conditions for your own destruction. We will not leave you alone. Wait for us,” Salami said on the day. of Kunts, the annual “defense” day of Jerusalem, in Tehran.

“You know better than us what will knock on your door if you take malicious action,” Salami said.
