In execution by hanging of British-Iranian Alireza Akbari, Tehran proceededafter sentencing him to death on charges of espionage for Britain.
The news was reported by the Iranian media without, however, specifying when and how.
“Alireza Akbari, who was sentenced to death on charges of corruption on the ground and extensive actions against the internal and external security of the country by spying for the intelligence services of the British government…has been executed,” Mizan news agency reported on Twitter.
A video of Akbari’s last moments, dated 13/01, was also released on twitter.

A few hours earlier, BBC Persian broadcast recorded statements of Akbari in which he said that he confessed after being tortured.
“With over 3,500 hours of torture, hallucinogenic substances and methods of physical and psychological pressure, they rendered me insensible. They drove me to the brink of insanity…and forced me to make false confessions at gunpoint and death threats,” reads the excerpt.
Akbari’s execution provoked a strong reaction from Britain and Amnesty International.
“I am shocked by the execution of British-Iranian citizen Alireza Akbari in Iran.
This was a cruel and cowardly act, carried out by a barbaric regime with no respect for the human rights of its people. My thoughts are with Alireza’s friends and family,” Rishi Sunak tweeted.

This was a callous and cowardly act, carried out by a barbaric regime with no respect for the human rights of their own people. My thoughts are with Alireza’s friends and family.

“This morning’s execution by Iranian authorities of British-Iranian citizen Alireza Akbari demonstrates once again their appalling attack on the right to life,” Amnesty International said, calling on the British government to “fully investigate” allegations of Akbari’s torture. .
