Iran welcomes ceasefire in Yemen

Tehran today welcomed the achievement of a UN-mediated ceasefire in Yemen, between the international alliance under Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels allied with Iran, and called for a negotiated solution to the seven-state conflict.

“Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Hatibzadeh expressed the hope that this move could herald a complete lifting of the embargo and a permanent ceasefire in order to find a political solution to the Yemeni war crisis,” they said. the Iranian media.

Saudi Arabia and Iran, respectively Sunni and Shiite Muslim strongholds in the Gulf region, are fierce rivals, but held direct talks last year as world powers sought to salvage the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) program. UN peacekeeping efforts to end the war in Yemen have had little success, ahead of the announcement of a truce expected to take effect today.
