Iranian authorities on Saturday detained prominent actress Taraneh Alidoosti, star of “The Apartment”, which won the Oscar for best foreign film in 2017, after she expressed support for anti-government demonstrations taking place across the country.
Alidoosti posted, on November 9, a photo on Instagram in which he was without a headscarf and with a sign saying “Woman, life, freedom” – one of the main slogans of the demonstrators who are taking to the streets.
“Alidoosti, who did not provide documents to support some of her claims, was arrested hours ago by order of the judicial authority,” the official IRNA news agency said, quoting a statement from the judiciary.
The statement notes that several celebrities were summoned because of “unsubstantiated comments about recent events and publication of provocative material in support of past street riots”, and that some were detained.
In 2020, Alidoosti received a five-month sentence, which was suspended, after he criticized on Twitter the morality police, which impose the hijab or Islamic dress code.
The actress was the latest of dozens of artists, journalists and lawyers detained over the past three months for speaking out against a violent security crackdown on protesters, some of whom have been released on bail.
The unrest currently gripping Iran was triggered by the September 16 death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was arrested for wearing “inappropriate dress” under Iran’s strict Islamic dress code for women.
The protests pose one of the biggest challenges to theocratic rule in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
