Iranian actresses were banned from working because they appeared in public without a headscarf

The Iranian authorities reported today that at least 12 actors were banned to work because appeared in public without wearing a headscarf which is mandatory in Islamic democracy. “Those who do not respect the law are not allowed to work,” Culture and Islamic Guidance Minister Mohammad Mehdi Esmaili said after a cabinet meeting. He thus confirmed the suggestions made a day earlier by the head of the cinema service, Habib Il Beygi, according to which more than 12 actors can no longer take part in filming because they did not respect the hijab law. “They can no longer appear in a new film,” he said, clarifying that films they have participated in may be released so that the production companies are not financially affected.

Actors and celebrities have appeared without a headscarf on social media since protest movement triggered by the death, on September 16, 2022, of Mahsa Aminiof a 22-year-old young woman who died after being arrested for violating strict dress code that applies in Iran.

Among the actresses banned from working are Taraneh Alidusti, Katayoun Riahi and Fatemeh Motamed-Aria, according to the website of the Hamshahri newspaper. Taraneh Alidusti, who was arrested and temporarily detained in 2022, is one of the most famous actresses still living in Iran, as reported by APE-MPE. Known for her roles in films by director Asghar Farhadi, she had posted on social media a photo of herself without a headscarf and a message in Kurdish supporting the Woman-Life-Freedom movement.
