Iranian ambassador to Yemen, who left the country a few days ago, died of a coronavirus

An Iranian diplomat serving as ambassador to Yemen in areas controlled by Shiite Houthi rebels has died of covid-19 after being repatriated last week, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said today.

Ambassador Hassan Irlou “left in a bad situation due to delayed cooperation from some countries,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Hatibzadeh explained, without naming any country.

The Iranian ministry spokesman appeared to be referring to Saudi Arabia, which along with Iraq helped remove Irlu from Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, by Iraqi aircraft, according to a Houthi spokesman.

Hatibzadeh called Irlu a “witness” and said he had survived chemical attacks during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

Last December, the US Treasury Department blacklisted Irlou as an official of Iran’s Koz Force – the Revolutionary Guards unit for overseas operations – and a pillar of Tehran’s efforts to influence Yemen, Syria and elsewhere.
