Iranian authorities will fine miners for using “home electricity”

Iranian Energy Ministry spokesman Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi said the agency is imposing harsh penalties on miners mining cryptocurrencies in residential buildings.

Mashhadi said that this year the situation in Iran’s energy sector has worsened due to a decrease in electricity generation from hydroelectric power plants due to a lack of rain.

In addition, “home” miners load networks and consume significant amounts of energy. Therefore, the department decided to impose a fine on such miners, as well as to recover from them compensation for “causing damage to the energy network.”

Miners are wreaking havoc on transformers and networks, and continued mining activities could make the distribution of electricity more difficult, according to an Iranian Ministry of Energy spokesman. This increases the likelihood of failure of the electrical network and transformers, and hence power outages.

Recall that in 2019, mining in Iran was recognized as a type of industrial activity, however, mining companies must obtain a special license. Given the extremely low price of electricity in the country, mining, including illegal mining, is flourishing in Iran. Since July 2019, the authorities have closed about 1,620 illegal mining farms.
